(Guthrie Center, IA) — New Opportunities requested funds from the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors in Tuesday’s weekly meeting for two new programs related to the treatment of opioid patients. New Opportunities helps families and individuals in a seven county area with counseling, treatment, child development and other social services. Their plan is to treat opioid patients through a mentoring program and hiring a recovery coach. Chad Jenkins of New Opportunities
The organization is asking for $25,000 for the recovery coach and $15,000 for the mentoring program for a total of $40,000. Christy Jenkins of New Opportunities says the recovery part is often forgotten about
Chad Jenkins says that recovery coach positions have been established across the state for the last 3-5 years and he believes the money is more of a start up situation where it can pay for itself
The Board did not take immediate action on the request and tabled it for a future meeting to make a final decision.
The Board also set a public hearing for a budget amendment for May 27 at 9:30 am.
