(Pottawattamie Co) Pottawattamie County is joining the nationwide celebration of National Nurses Week, May 6–12, 2025, to honor the vital role nurses play in the U.S. health care system. The theme, “The Power of Nurses,” recognizes the tireless work and extraordinary impact of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, and support staff.
Matt Wyant, Director of Planning and Development, said Pottawattamie County employs nurses at the jail and the public health department.
The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors calls on residents to show appreciation for nurses’ contributions year-round. As part of the observance, the county courthouse and other landmarks will be lit in red to support the Nurses Light Up the Sky initiative, honoring nurses and raising public awareness.
The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday also signed a proclamation designating the week of May 4-10 as National Travel and Tourism Week. Board Chair Scott Belt read the resolution which states that the travel industry is essential to the success of every industry and will continue to be a critical part of Pottawattamie County’s economy, development, and workforce, being at the crossroads of Interstates 80 and 29.
In 2023, Pottawattamie County saw $336.24 million in direct travel spending—6th highest among Iowa’s 99 counties—contributing to the state’s $7.3 billion in traveler spending and supporting small businesses and local jobs. Recognizing the vital role of travel in driving economic growth, local revenue, and national connection, Chair Scott Belt proclaims May 4–10, 2025, as National Travel and Tourism Week in Pottawattamie County, urging residents to celebrate the impact of the travel industry.
And, the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has declared May 4–10, 2025, as National Correctional Officers Week to recognize the dedication and professionalism of correctional staff. Correctional officers face daily risks while upholding high standards and contributing to offender rehabilitation through education, counseling, and training.
