(Council Bluffs, IA) — There is one word to describe Lili Denton of St. Albert in Track and Field — Dominant. The Junior is having a terrific season and is shooting for multiple titles at the state meet this year. So far, Denton is the fastest in Class 1A in the 1500 and 3000 and she is 2nd in the 800 behind Kadence Huck of Nashua Plainfield who she is very familiar with. Huck beat Denton last year in the state tournament in the 800 and 1500 while Denton took the title in the 3000. Denton says that a kind of rivalry has developed
Denton says she is motivated to do even better this year. She went out for cross country for the first time in the fall and won the Class 1A state title. She was the first runner this year in the state to get under 10 minutes in the 2 mile. She qualified for the Drake Relays in three different events, finishing 2nd to Charlee Gall of Cedar Falls in the 3,000 on Thursday; then finished 9th in the 800 on Friday and came back on Saturday and finished 2nd to Gall again in the 1500 and it was close, losing by just 1 1/2 seconds
Denton did not start running until middle school and took an instant liking to it — maybe because she was so good at it. She loved the competition of track and she says its a different kind of competition from other sports
Denton says she has been inspired by a number of people that have helped bring her success
Denton says she does have a goal of running track in college and a few schools have reached out to her but she says she is only in the beginning of that process. Lili Denton will be on the track tonight at Bruce Henderson Invite in Atlantic.
