(Denison) About 500 gallons of wastewater spilled into the Boyer River early Sunday morning after a valve malfunction at Smithfield Fresh Meats Corporation in Denison. The company reported the incident to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Field Office in Atlantic.
The malfunction caused wastewater to flow into an open storm drain, leading directly to the Boyer River. Smithfield staff quickly identified the issue and shut the storm drain to stop any further discharge.
The DNR is overseeing the ongoing cleanup efforts. Until cleanup is complete, the public is urged to avoid contact with the Boyer River. At this time, no fish kills have been observed.
The DNR will determine any necessary enforcement actions once its investigation is finished.
To report a spill after hours, call the DNR’s emergency line at (515) 725-8694. Quick reporting helps the DNR respond effectively. More information on spill reporting requirements is available on the DNR’s website.
