(Des Moines) The Iowa House of Representatives has passed Senate File 583, a significant piece of legislation aimed at improving school safety across the state. The bill, supported by District 18 Representative Tom Moore, establishes multidisciplinary threat assessment teams within schools to proactively address potential safety concerns.
Under SF 583, schools are authorized to form teams comprised of local law enforcement officials, juvenile court services representatives, mental health professionals, social service representatives, and school officials. These teams will work collaboratively to identify students who may be experiencing emotional disturbances, mental health challenges, or who may pose a significant threat to others.
