(Stanton) Shortly after 3 p.m., on Friday, March 28, Montgomery County 911 received a report of a hay bale fire spreading into a cornfield at 2745 220th St., northeast of Stanton. Within minutes, the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was alerted by the U.S. National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, Nebraska, which detected a wildfire in the same area.
According to the Montgomery County Emergency Management Page, with smoke visible from miles away, red flag conditions present, and confirmation of the wildfire detection from the NWS, additional mutual aid was requested before fire crews arrived on the scene. Montgomery County 911 also contacted area farmers from its assistance list, requesting tractors and discs to help combat the fire.
As the fire rapidly spread northward, it consumed multiple hay bales and several acres of dry, harvested land. Additional fire crews arrived to assist, and with the help of local farmers using farm equipment, the fire was quickly contained. Orme Outdoors and Allen Tile and Drainage further aided the effort by burying the burning hay bales to prevent rekindling.
