(Atlantic) The Atlantic Fire Department responded to two grass fires on Wednesday. The first fire broke out early in the afternoon at 644th Street and Jackson Road, originating from a brush pile, according to Atlantic Fire Chief Tom Cappel. Audio PlayerLater in the afternoon, a second fire ignited on Highland Road, west of the Atlantic Airport. Cappel stated that this fire began as a controlled burn of prairie grass but was spread by strong south winds, causing the flames to jump the highway and extend into a nearby farm field.
Audio PlayerFirefighters successfully extinguished both fires, with no reported injuries or structural damage. Chief Cappel reminds residents planning controlled burns to notify the local fire department beforehand.
