(Des Moines) An Iowa principal will receive a congressional honor.
Dan Marburger was fatally wounded in January 2024 while trying to protect students during a shooting at Perry High School. Marburger will receive the 2024 Single Act of Heroism award given by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
The Perry Community School District has officially dedicated a gym to the former high school principal, Dan Marburger. The Perry High School gym was named the Dan Marburger Court.
The former Perry High principal died from his injuries after being shot by a 17-year-old student in January of 2024. The student entered the high school’s cafeteria, shot and killed an eleven-year-old student, and fatally injured Marburger. Police say he tried to intervene to protect students. Six other people were also wounded before the 17-year-old student took his own life.
Mr. Marburger is the only one among four individuals who will be honored posthumously.
