(Atlantic, IA) — Cindy Steffens of Atlantic was a member of the 1975 Lake View-Auburn girls basketball team that won a state championship and on Saturday she and her team will be honored by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union at halftime of the 2A State Championship Game. It is the 50th anniversary of their upset win over Mediapolis 51-50 in overtime and it would the first of two straight state titles for the team. Steffens remembers they were underdogs going into the game but that didn’t mean they weren’t confident of their chances
Mediapolis missed some key free throws down the stretch and the game went into overtime — that’s when Head Coach Bud McCrea employed the use of a designated jumper to start the extra period
Mickey Oberding would hit the game winning shot with 15 seconds left in the overtime and after Mediapolis missed their final chance to win it, Steffens remembers being in the middle of the mob near mid court but she remembers better the bus ride home
Of course, Lake View-Auburn won in 6 on 6 basketball which is a rich part of Iowa history says Steffens
Steffens says she has only casually kept in touch with some of her former teammates on social media so this will be a great opportunity. It will be at halftime of the 2A state title game which will air on Iowa PBS tomorrow starting at 4:45 pm. Lake View Auburn is now part of the East Sac County school district.
