(Harlan) The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 4:30 a.m., Deputies responded to the 1800 block of College Place in Harlan for a welfare check. Upon arrival, Deputies were met with a standoff situation with an armed male subject. Deputies were negotiating with the male subject when he made aggressive movements towards law enforcement. Shots were fired at the suspect by law enforcement and lifesaving measures were taken on scene. The suspect was transported to Myrtue Hospital in Harlan where the subject was declared deceased a short time later.
The suspect is identified as 36-year-old David Plagmann. Also located on scene was a deceased female, identified as 31-year-old Alexis Martin.
This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community. The Deputy involved in the shooting incident is on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation is currently ongoing and being conducted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
