(Des Moines, IA) — Aiden Smith and Evan Sorensen of Atlantic have made it into the Semifinals of the Iowa High School Wrestling State Tournament. Smith made it look easy in his quarterfinal match, beating Jax Miller of West Delaware 10-6. Afterward, he pumped both fists up in the air and signaled to his family in the stands. Smith makes it into the semifinals which he did not do last year. Sorensen, meanwhile, had a scoreless first period against Trenton Davies of Williamsburg but after getting an escape to start the 2nd, Davies tried to make a move and Sorensen made him pay, dropping him to his back and earning the pin at 2:57. Elsewhere for Atlantic, after getting disqualified yesterday, Colin Harris at 113 beat Angel Cortes of Clarion Goldfield Dows by fall at 1:59 but lost to Stratton Luke of Union 7-2 and his season ends 40-14. At 120, Braxton Hass had a big night with two tech falls – TF 15-0 win over Caden Steinkemp of Center Point Urbana and a TF 16-1 win over Jake Haugse of Mt. Vernon. Hass will wrestle in the blood round to see if he can get on the medal stand.
Kalvin Hayes beat Nile Benge of Winterset 12-7 at 138 pounds — there was back to back reversals in the 2nd period but Hayes had an 8-2 lead going to the third. He gave up a quick takedown but got an escape and took Benge down in quick order to take control of the match. Hayes came back and lost to Dax Koedam of Sgt. Bluff-Luton 16-2 MD and his season ends at 42-15.
At 190 pounds, Donovan Hedrington did not have things go his way against Maison Copp of AP-GC. He got a takedown in the first period but got reversed and gave up near fall points. Hedrington reversed back and got 4 near fall points at the end of the first period to lead 9-5. Copp started on the bottom in the 2nd period, got a quick escape then got Hedrington out of position took him down and secured the fall at 2:54 ending Hedrington’s season at 44-16.
Audubon
106 — Leyton Elmquist got a takedown in the first period and a reversal with 10 seconds left in the second period to beat Lucas Peters of West Delaware 6-3 and the freshman got his first ever win at the state tournament. His tournament was ended by Mitchell Williams of Crestwood with an 18-6 MD and Elmquist finishes his freshman season at 43-14.
126 — Lane Elmquist lost in his consolation round match to Jarrett Engel of West Delaware 14-8 and finished his junior season at 38-16.
132 — Jon Rasmussen lost in his consolation round match to Remy Ressler of Independence by fall at 1:08 and the freshman finished 23-19.
Harlan
126 — Jesse Jens ran into a buzzsaw in the quarterfinals in Gabe Spurgeon the #1 seed from Eddyville who beat him by TF 19-3. Jens will be in the blood round on Friday.
150 — Brody McKinley had a one sided match in the consolation round, beating Dayton Ullrich of OABCIG by TF 17-0 but Jax Jensen of Winterset ended the senior’s season by fall at 2:36 and McKinley finishes 42-14.
157 — Chayton Snethen lost to Dirk Boyles of Burlington Notre Dame by TF 21-1 and his final record is 36-23
175 — Brody Bendorf lost 8-2 to Ayden Antonelli of Anamosa to finish 25-11.

215 — Mason Nally won in the consolation round by fall at 2:59

132 — Lane Travis beat Cael Cotter of North Polk in his first consolation match 14-8 and then won 4-2 over Wyatt Johnson of Cherokee to advance to the blood round.
138 — Brodrick Phelps lost to Charlie Karem of Solon by fall at 5:35 and finishes the season at 34-22.
215 — Gunnar Martwick won his first round consolation match by fall at 4:26 but lost 7-1 and finished his season 35-23.

113 — Brody Black lost by fall at 4:40 and his season ends at 31-19,
157 — Reese Fauble beat Aiden Ortega of Center Point Urbana 21-8 and then got the win over Brady Grier of Williamsburg MD 12-4 to advance to the blood round on Friday.
175 — Jacob Aust lost to Josh Ringler of Grinnell MD 11-0 and finished 24-16
215 — Mason Koehler defeated Gavin Goche of Algona in the quarterfinals

165 — Adam Baier lost his semifinal round match by fall at 3:22 to #2 seed Tucker Vitzhum of Ballard. Baier will be in the blood round on Friday.
