(Des Moines, IA) — Aiden Smith and Evan Sorensen of Atlantic both made into the Quarterfinals of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament. Jesse Jens of Harlan also made it through in the front end and all three wrestlers are poised to make a run at the semifinals on Thursday evening.
Smith had made the move up a weight class to 144 pounds and he faced a strong kid from Decorah, Kasan Tyler who had won in the first round 21-9 over Gavin Day of Winterset. Smith got an early takedown but gave up a point on a penalty, escape, and Tyler got a takedown right at the end of the first period to take a 5-3 lead. Smith chose bottom to start the second and got a quick escape then got a takedown midway through the period to retake a 7-5 advantage. The third period was all Smith with a takedown at the 1:15 mark and then 4 near fall points going on to a 16-6 win.
Sorensen had to wrestle in the first round as a district runner up but make quick work of Trayvahn Williams of Iowa Falls Alden in 49 seconds. In the second round, Sorensen faced a much bigger kid in J.T. Kelso of Clarion Goldfield Dows and he found it difficult to make a move on him. Sorensen finally got going out of nowhere late in the 2nd period by picking his opponent up and getting near fall points to lead 8-0. He ran out of time in the period otherwise he would have gotten the pin. The final score was 8-0.
Elsewhere for the Trojans, Donovan Hedrington won his first round match at 190 by fall at 5:18 then practically jumped in the stands to hug his brother who surprised him. Hedrington, however, lost to #2 seed Austin Scranton of Anamosa by fall at 49 seconds. Braxton Hass also got a first round win at 120 pounds by fall at 1:26 but lost in the second round 13-8 to Jon Gonzalez of West Marshall. Kalvin Hayes lost his first round match at 138 10-0 MD.
Finally at 113 pounds, Collin Harris was leading his match over Lucas Anderson of Chariton when the opposing coach pointed out to the official that Harris was wearing an improper mouthpiece. A coach tried to locate the proper equipment but injury time ran out and Harris was disqualified from the match. He will be able to compete in the consolation round.
For Harlan, Jesse Jens is through to the 126 quarterfinals with a 10-2 MD win over Brody Buhman of Davnport Assumption. At 150, Brody McKinley won his first round match by fall at 1:24 but lost to #1 seed Shane Hanford of West Marshall by fall at 2:48. At 157, Chayton Snethen lost his first round match by tech fall. At 175, Brody Bendorf lost his first round match by MD 8-0.
Audubon had a tough day on Wednesday going 0-3. At 106 pounds, Leyton Elmquist lost by MD 12-1. At 126 pounds, Lane Elmquist lost by MD 12-1. At 132 pounds, Jon Rasmussen lost by tech fall. All three will compete on Thursday in the consolation round.
Clarinda: Mason Nally at 215 had a first round bye but got upset by Gavin Goche of Algona 11-7
Creston: At 132, Lane Travis won his first round match by MD 13-5 but lost 10-5 to Brett Johnson of Eddyville. At 138, Brodrick Phelps lost in the first round by MD 10-0. At 215, Gunnar Martwick won in the first round by fall at 4:58 but lost in the 2nd round in 28 seconds to Lucas Feuerbach of Solon.
Glenwood: 113 — Brody Black lost at 2:49. 157 — Reese Fauble won at 3:06 then lost by tech fall. 175 — Jacob Aust lost 4-0. 215 — Mason Koehler is the #1 seed and after a bye, won by fall in 50 seconds.
Red Oak: Adam Baier won his only match with a tight 3-2 win over Blake Johnson of Eddyville
