(Jewell, IA) — AC/GC will send six wrestlers to the state tournament next week at the Wells Fargo Arena.
District champions for the Chargers include Ryder Cline at 144 pounds, Jackson Pfrang at 175, and Jack Sheeder at 285. District runner ups went to Gavin Sloss at 126 pounds, Angel Martinez at 165 and Carter Richter at 190.
Cline got a dramatic 8-6 win in the finals over Aiden Hellman of Don Bosco — the sophomore held a 6-2 lead going to the third period buy Hellman got an escape and takedown with 49 seconds left to tie it up at 6-6. Cline would reverse Hellman with 18 seconds left and then was able to ride him out for the district title.
Pfrang and Cooper Nattress of South Central Calhoun kept reversing each other in the first two periods but Pfrang built a big lead, then survived a reversal and near fall points at the end to finish with a 15-8 win.
Sheeder got a takedown in the first period, a takedown in the 2nd period and then finished off Jace Pedersen of South Central Calhoun at 3:58 to earn a district title.
At 190 in the semifinals, Carter Richter got a takedown in 19 seconds left in the third period to beat Mason Anderson of Manson NW Webster 4-2. In the finals, Richter lost to drew Lansing of Don Bosco 10-0 MD but Anderson won the third place match so there was no wrestleback.
At 126, Sloss beat Drake Dvorak of North Tama by tech fall in the semifinals but lost by MD 10-2 to Blake Irvine of Don Bosco in the finals but did not have a wrestleback to advance to state.
At 165, Angel Martinez was the three seed but beat #2 seed Hayden Stickrod of South Central Calhoun by tech fall, then lost by fall at 2:11 to Kyler Knaack of Don Bosco. Stickrod would hang on and win the third place match 9-8 so there was no wrestleback for Martinez.
