(Atlantic) The Atlantic girl’s golf team has a new head coach. The Atlantic School Board has approved the contract for Brooke Newell, a former standout athlete in high school and college, to succeed Kathy Hobson, who retired after last season following an outstanding coaching career.
Newell expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying she has large shoes to fill in replacing Coach Hobson.
Brooke Newell is a proven winner, having helped lead Atlantic teams to three state titles. She is a remarkable three-time top-five finisher at the Iowa Girls High School State Golf Tournament, with one third-place finish and two runner-up finishes. She played golf at the University of Nebraska and continued her career at Missouri State, earning three letters. During her time there, she won the Oral Roberts Invitational, was named player of the week twice, and became a three-time Academic All-American. She was also part of the Missouri State Conference Championship team and competed on a team with the lowest score in tournament history. Through all that experience, Newell says the focus will be on the short game.
Coach Newell plans to schedule some youth golf camps in the off-season, which she led during her employment at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
Preseason practice officially starts on March 17. The first competition is against Creston on April 10 at the Nishna Hills Golf Course in Atlantic.
