(Audubon County) Fire departments from Anita, Adair, Brayton, and Exira responded to a grass fire just north of the Audubon-Cass County line on Wednesday afternoon.
Anita Assistant Fire Chief Jake Karnes tells KSOM/KS95 News that an Anita volunteer firefighter spotted the blaze around 3:30 p.m. in a CRP field near the intersection of Quail Avenue and 340th Street in Audubon County. The fire is believed to have been sparked by embers from a burn barrel at a nearby residence, ultimately scorching an estimated 40 acres.
Fortunately, a previously mowed strip bordering the field helped contain the fire and prevent further spread. Firefighters worked quickly and had the situation under control within just over an hour.
The Anita Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Adair, Brayton, Exira, and Audubon County Emergency Management Coordinator Tyler Thygesen.
