(Atlantic) Atlantic dominated Red Oak in a 60-23 victory during a Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday in Atlantic.
The Trojans’ stifling defense set the tone early, converting turnovers into points during a 13-0 run that helped establish a commanding 19-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. By halftime, Atlantic extended their advantage to 39-8. Senior Paytn Harter, honored pregame for becoming the school’s all-time five-on-five career scoring leader with 1,261 career points, led the charge with 13 first-half points, while Katrina Williams contributed eight points in the opening half.
In the second half, Makenna Schroeder energized the offense with two three-pointers, while Zoey Kirchhoff added another, extending the lead to 52-15 by the end of the third quarter. With a running clock in play, Atlantic’s reserves saw increased playing time. Red Oak found some rhythm, with Mariel Ramirez and Ellison Johnson leading their second-half effort with a combined three three point baskets.
Schroeder led the Trojans with 16 points, followed by Harter with 13, Kirchhoff with 9, Williams with 8, and Lila Wiederstein and Peyton McLaren each adding 4 points. Brynn Lamp, McKenna Sonntag, and Claire Comes chipped in 2 points apiece.
For the Tigers, Ramirez scored 8 points, Johnson added 6, Natalie Johnson contributed 4, and Emily Siebeniecher tallied 2.
With the win, Atlantic improves to 10-5 and will face Treynor on Thursday. Red Oak falls to 0-13 and is set to travel to Glenwood on Friday.
