(Greenfield) Multiple fire departments teamed up with the Greenfield Fire Department on Friday afternoon to battle a massive fire at G&H Motor Freight Lines, located at 116 NW North Townline Road, on the north side of Greenfield. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremy Cooper tells KSOM/KS95 News, the fire was reported just before 4:00 p.m.
The blaze started in the building’s storage and workshop area before spreading to the dry storage and office sections. Cooper said that at the time of the fire, five employees were working in the office when they heard a loud explosion. One of them stepped outside, saw the flames, and immediately alerted the others. All five workers safely evacuated the building and called 9-1-1.
The fire reportedly began in the structure’s southeast corner, near two recently parked trucks in that area. Cooper noted that it is still unclear whether the fire originated from one of the trucks. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The roof of the building collapsed during the fire, and firefighters continued to work on hot spots as the structure was determined to be a total loss.
Assisting the Greenfield Fire Department were the Stuart Fire Department, which deployed its ladder truck, as well as fire crews from Adair, Orient, and Fontanelle Fire Departments. The Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Adair County Emergency Management Agency, Greenfield Police Department, and Fontanelle Police Department also supported the effort.
