It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mike Henningsen, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Mike left us on December 10, 2024, at the age of 72. Born in Atlantic, Iowa, on October 4, 1952, Mike lived a life full of passion, dedication, and a deep love for his family and community.
Mike was a devoted husband to Kathy, his partner of 45 years. He was a proud father to Ann (Matt) Pickens, Brad (Kendra) Henningsen, and Beth (Joe) Wieland. His grandchildren, Owen, Jack, Kate, Emma, JJ, Cam, and Lola, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
A man of strong faith, Mike was an active and devoted member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, where he served in many roles over the years.
As the third-generation owner of Henningsen Construction, Mike made an indelible mark on the asphalt and steel buildings industry. He was deeply respected for his leadership and vision, including his tenure as president of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa, where he was honored with induction into their Hall of Fame in 2015. Mike’s work ethic and contributions to his community extended far beyond the business world. He was a long-time board member of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry and served for 20 years on the Atlantic Airport Commission.
Mike was also an avid golfer, finding great joy in spending time at the Atlantic Golf & Country Club and Stone Canyon Club (Oro Valley, Arizona). He had a passion for aviation, particularly vintage aircraft like his beloved Big Beautiful Doll P-51 and T-6. Passing down the joy of flying to his son and grandsons brought him tremendous happiness.
Mike is also survived by his sisters, Lynn Sparks and Christy (Mike) Pfordresher, and his step-sister Robyn Uehling. He was loved by many, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 17, at 1 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, Iowa, with a celebration of life to follow at the Atlantic Airport (Henningsen Hangar), where Mike’s love for aviation can be remembered and honored.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Atlantic First United Presbyterian Church, a place that meant so much to Mike throughout his life.
Mike’s legacy will live on in the love he shared, the friendships he forged, and the many lives he touched. He will forever be remembered, deeply missed, and always loved.
Vistoso Funeral Home of Oro Valley, Arizona is in charge of arrangements.
