(Atlantic) Funeral services for longtime Atlantic Businessman Mike Henningsen will be held on Tuesday, December 17, at 1 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Following the service, life will be celebrated at the Atlantic Airport (Henningsen Hangar), honoring Mike’s love for aviation.
Mike passed away on December 10, 2024, at the age of 72. Born in Atlantic, Iowa, on October 4, 1952. As the third-generation owner of Henningsen Construction, Mike impacted the asphalt and steel building industries. Respected for his vision and leadership, he served as president of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2015. Beyond his professional achievements, Mike gave generously to his community. He served for 20 years on the Atlantic Airport Commission and was a long-time Iowa Association of Business and Industry board member.
Mike had a zest for life, whether on the golf course at the Atlantic Golf & Country Club or Stone Canyon Club in Oro Valley, Arizona, or in the skies piloting vintage aircraft. His love for aviation, especially his Big Beautiful Doll P-51 Mustang and T-6, was a passion he joyfully passed on to his son and grandsons.
Mike and his wife Kathy, of 45 years, raised three children: Ann (Matt) Pickens, Brad (Kendra) Henningsen, and Beth (Joe) Wieland. His grandchildren—Owen, Jack, Kate, Emma, JJ, Cam, and Lola—were his incredible pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He is survived by his sisters, Lynn Sparks and Christy (Mike) Pfordresher, and his step-sister, Robyn Uehling. Mike’s kindness and warmth left a mark on all who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Instead of flowers, the family invites memorial contributions to the Atlantic First United Presbyterian Church, which held a special place in Mike’s heart.
