(Corning) The Southwest Valley Community School District started classes on time this morning after a student shared an alarming Snapchat message on Tuesday with the school administration. The district quickly implemented the emergency response plan, notified the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, which responded quickly to the scene, and recommended a temporary school lockdown.
School Superintendent Chris Fenster says that once they had enough detailed information, the administration lifted the lockdown and issued an all-clear to staff and students. School resumed at all campuses, and the school day ended with a regular dismissal. Fenster says social media makes it incredibly easy to share information that can be disruptive and dangerous.
Fenster says if you see anything that looks like a school threat on social media, report it to your local law enforcement agency, the school, or safeandsoundiowa.gov.
Chris Fenster says the Southwest Valley Community School District takes all threats of school violence seriously and will continue to do so. He reminds the public that it is a crime for any individual to create and share electronic communication with the intent to intimidate or alarm others.
