(Des Moines) The Iowa Board of Nursing has taken action against several nurses, including Rahni Brower, 40, of Carroll, who is accused of stealing medications and potentially affecting a patient’s welfare. Brower, who worked for Carroll Area Nursing Services (CANS) for 18 months, was fired in December 2022. After her termination, CANS administrator Kimberly Lambert reported that Brower stole a patient’s medications, including oxycodone, causing increased pain for the patient. Lambert testified that Brower failed an initial drug test due to temperature issues, although a subsequent test was negative.
Following her dismissal, Brower allegedly visited patients’ homes and stole medications, including fentanyl patches and hydrocodone, replacing them with Tylenol. Additionally, a fourth patient reported missing 120 pills, including oxycodone. Two of Brower’s previous employers also reported unaccounted-for medications.
Brower denied the thefts, claiming her post-termination visits were to return borrowed items. However, the board found sufficient evidence of theft and suspended her license, which can be reinstated if she completes a substance abuse and mental health evaluation, complies with treatment recommendations, and takes a course on professional boundaries and ethics.
Brower faces multiple charges in Carroll County and Greene County, including misdemeanors and felonies related to unlawful possession and theft of controlled substances. She has pleaded not guilty, with trials scheduled for August 13 and September 16, respectively. Her license suspension began on April 12, and she informed the court in May that she is currently working for Vivian Health, a medical staffing agency.
