Mary “Angela” (Heitman) Roenfeld was born on December 4, 1929 to Edward and Irene (Schoening) Heitman at their home in Dumfries, Iowa. She was lucky to survive her birth as she was born breach after a long and hard delivery. She grew up on a farm and attended grade school in a one room school house in Lewis Township. She later attended high school at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1947.
After high school, she stayed at home to help her mother. Angela loved going to Polka Dances at Sokol Hall in Omaha, Nebraska. It was there she met her husband, Wilbert Roenfeld. They married on September 27, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union, four children were born, Randall Wilbert, Joyce Louise, Julie Lynne, and Rodney Neil.
Angela was a loving farm wife and mother who had a large flower and vegetable garden. She did a lot of canning and freezing. She worked at Best Western Motel in Walnut, Iowa and Highway Motel in Harlan, Iowa cleaning rooms. She also worked at Baptist Home and Elm Crest as a Dietary Aid for 14 years. She and her family were members of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa for over 55 years. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was involved in Circle holding several offices in addition to spending all day sewing and tying quilts etc. She and her husband were also janitors for over 6 years at the church. Angela was also involved with her children in 4-H serving as a 4-H leader. Her favorite pastime was attending Polka dances with her husband and friends in Iowa and Nebraska.
In 1982, Wilbert retired from farming and they both moved to Harlan, Iowa. Her husband passed away very unexpectedly in 2007. Angela still maintained their house with daily house work duties until her health failed.
Angela passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of 94 years, 6 months and 10 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Irene Heitman; husband, Wilbert Roenfeld; daughter, Joyce Lund; daughter-in-law, Joyce Roenfeld; and sons-in-law, Dar Lund and Bob Long.
She is survived by her children, Randy Roenfeld of Council Bluffs, IA, Julie Long of Harlan, Iowa, Rodney Roenfeld of Harlan, IA; granddaughters Kristina(Kirk) Dekker, Michelle Lund, Amy (Derek) Genck; 6 great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
