(Des Moines) The National Weather Service in Des Moines says strong to severe storms could develop this afternoon and evening over western Iowa. The main threats are large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes.
Additional strong to severe storms and locally heavy rainfall are possible on Sunday nights in far northern Iowa. Periodic chances for storms continue through much of next week; however, the threat of severe weather is uncertain.
Heat and humidity build early next week with hot temperatures, daily highs in the 90s, and overnight lows in the 70s. The heat index may top 100 degrees at times.
Scattered non-severe thunderstorms will sweep through some parts of southwestern Iowa this morning, before additional storms develop later this afternoon and evening.
