(Griswold, IA) – What looked to be a close game on a beautiful Tuesday night ended up in a big victory on the side of the Griswold Tigers after defeating CAM 10-0 in five innings of softball action. Both teams came into the game with winning streaks but the Cougars came out of the game with a loss on the board as Griswold now continues their winning streak to six games.
Scoring started off in the first inning of action for the Griswold Tigers. First batter up, Marissa Askeland was able to reach first on an error and advance to second after the groundout to third by Abby Gohlinghorst. Dakota Reynolds came up to the plate and was able to punch out a single and pushed Askeland to third to put two on with one out. Karly Millikan came up to the plate and launched a sacrifice fly to bring in Askeland and then pushed Reynolds home off a missed throw by CAM in the infield to put the game at 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning, Griswold was able to add five more runs on the board with a double by Dakota Reynolds and Kate Tischer while Karly Millikan and Whitney Pennock each earned a single to help push a 7-0 lead heading into the fourth. The fourth inning continued the scoring run by the Tigers after Marissa Askeland’s triple and another hit by Pennock after she launched a double to put the Tigers ahead 9-0. Things ended in the bottom of the fifth when Griswold’s Addison Adams started off with a single and eventually made her way around the bases while scoring once again for the final run of the ballgame. Head Coach Jody Rossell knew that CAM would be a challenge and the Tigers took that challenge head-on with some hard hits that led to big runs.
Karly Millikan was the top player on the night for Griswold after pitching nine strikeouts while allowing no runs and only gave up four hits and no walks. At the plate, she earned an RBI and even knocked out a single on the night.
This game was just an example of seeing all the hard work pay off for Griswold game in and game out. While the Cougars had a total of four errors on the night, the bats were still the main key for Griswold. The Tigers have now won six games by 10 runs or more this season and don’t look to be slowing down any time soon.
Moving forward for Griswold, they’ll be taking on IKM-Manning on Wednesday followed by Sidney and East Mills on Thursday and Friday. For Coach Rossell, it is just taking everything one game and one inning at a time.
The Cougars will take on Boyer Valley as they look to jump back onto a winning path. Griswold improves to 13-1 on the season while CAM falls to a 7-3 overall record.
