(Red Oak) The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Hamman released an initial damage assessment caused by severe weather and tornadoes earlier this week.
Hamman says (28) residential structures were impacted by tornadoes in Montgomery County, including (4) identified structures within the City of Red Oak. Three were destroyed, five structures sustained major damage, 11 received minor damage, and nine others were affected by the storm.
Hamman says that while these numbers only capture residential structures, many private outbuildings, grain bins, vehicles, recreational trailers, and other properties have been significantly damaged and destroyed.
An estimated dollar amount of private losses is currently not available. Damage assessment continues to impact both city-owned and county-owned property and equipment. However, early estimates have identified well over two million dollars in losses.
Power outages are still impacting a large portion of Southwest Iowa REC customers. Information is being shared on their Facebook page as available.
The Stanton Viking Center and Community Room are open for charging electronics, locker rooms, and showers. Residents with immediate unmet needs are encouraged to contact Montgomery County EMA at 712-623-3749 to help facilitate the appropriate service and supplies. Montgomery EMA is working with the Southwest Iowa Community Foundation to set up a donation location for those wanting to help support those impacted within Montgomery County, and more information will be shared when it becomes available.
