(Guthrie Center, IA) The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors had their weekly meeting this morning with one of the main topics being the 2023/2024 fiscal year Sheriff’s budget. The main topic of discussion is the Sheriff’s office is significantly short on funds for this time of year. According to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, they purchased weapons at the beginning of the fiscal year and used the remaining weapon budget to purchase a new vehicle.
Both the Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Supervisors remember discussing using leftover money to purchase a vehicle. However, the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office purchased safety equipment as well, putting them over budget by an estimated $16,000.
The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office has overspent by a large margin and not balanced the percentage, and as of two weeks ago, they had approximately 9% of their yearly budget to get them through the rest of May and the entire month of June. The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors wants to find out what is a certain need for the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office to better future budgets.
The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for a budget amendment of approximately $203,000.
