(Des Moines, IA) – The Iowa Cubs continue to see the wins go in their direction after defeating the Louisville Bats 4-3.
The game was determined by a big sixth inning for the Cubbies. After two walks by Chase Strumpf and Jake Slaughter, the Cubbies had two outs with two runners on, but that wasn’t stopping Matt Mervis. The former major leaguer launched a double out to right-center field to bring in both Strumpf and Slaughter and gave the Cubs a 4-1 lead to head into the seventh inning.
Louisville made a run to try to put themselves back on top with a two-run homer by P.J. Higgins, but the stellar pitching by former World Series Champion pitcher, Carl Edwards Jr., helped to keep the Cubs on top as he earned the save. Edwin Escobar was able to take the victory on the day while pitching in two innings and had two strikeouts.
Owen Cassie led the Cubs on the day while going 2-3 at the plate and had an RBI and a walk. Matt Mervis went 1-4 with his home run and also earned two RBIs. The last top player for Iowa was David Peralta who hit 1-2 and earned an RBI.
Iowa returns back to action Thursday to take on the bats with the opening pitch at 12:00 p.m.
