(Des Moines, IA) — Some Iowans are concerned about proposed changes to Iowa’s Area Education Agencies.
“The AEAs are are our partners, helping our children grow into the best version of themselves as possible, ” said David Tilly, the former deputy director of the Iowa Department of Education. He calls AEAs a safety net. “Without current level of services our children’s future could be placed in jeopardy.”
Special education services for K-12 schools would stay with AEAs under the bill, but it would let schools find a contractor for general education media services. Tyler Raygor, the State Director at Americans for Prosperity, said, “It creates accountability and oversight for AEAs that currently does not exist. When parents and their children are being failed by the status quo, there is no accountability for them to rely on.”
If approved, the measure would take effect in the 2025-26 school year.
