(Elk Horn, IA) – Just before the break, the Exira-EHK Spartans took on the CAM Cougars in ranked matchup. The Cougars came out victorious in the game for the first time since 2018, as they beat the Spartans 59-53. Taryn Petersen led the team with 35 points as she shot 50% from the field in the game for the Spartans. Despite her success, Exira-EHK had 31 total turnovers in the game and shot just 35.4% from the field as a team.
Throughout the week, the Spartans have been working on the defensive side of the basketball, especially when it comes down to communication. Head Coach Tom Petersen has been emphasizing the importance of communication on the defensive side of the ball which will only improve their turnover ratio from before the break.
Exira-EHK is led this season by Taryn and Jaelynn Petersen. The freshman Taryn Petersen has averaged a team-leading 20.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while sophomore Jaelynn has averaged 13.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. When these two are on point, so is the team as a whole.
The Spartans will be dealt a big challenge coming out of the break, but have had the time to prepare throughout the week as they’ll battle ACGC on Saturday. The Chargers are led by Shay Lemke as she leads in points per game with 14.1 and in assists with 4.3. Camdyn Richter also is a big contributor on the offensive side with 10.6 points and a team-leading 7.7 rebounds per game this season. This well-coached ACGC team will be a tough test come Saturday for Exira-EHK.
Exira-EHK hosts ACGC tomorrow, January 6th with the opening tipoff at 3:00 p.m.
