(Anita, IA) – CAM has just moved up in the girls’ IGHSAU rankings into 11th place this week for their performance to start off the season. The Cougars are now 3-1 and that is due to the tough defense and good transition offense.
CAM features a standout player Eva Steffensen who has averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while also dishing out 6.3 assists. She has been a tough player to guard on the floor and has been a tough player to get around as she guards so well. Head coach Joe Wollum credits her success to her work off the court and the teammates around her.
In terms of the free-throw percentage, they are shooting at 53.4% overall as a team. The Cougars are also not a team that the three-pointer has favored this year as the team is shooting just 19.3% from the perimeter. These are just two things that CAM has to get better at, and if they do, that top-15 spot may give them a top-five spot later in the season.
An advantage that CAM holds on other teams is their defense. They are able to change up the defensive pressure easily on the floor, which only leads to halting opponents early.
In their lone loss of the season, CAM forced away the ball too much which created too many turnovers. The Cougars will be taking on West Harrison in a Rolling Valley Conference matchup. The Hawkeyes are led in scoring by Maclayn Houston with 19.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. West Harrison may only be 1-4 overall but brings some pressure to the floor. If CAM can eliminate their turnovers, then they may turn the Hawkeyes back home.
CAM hosts West Harrison on Friday with the start time at 6:00 p.m. KSOM 96.5 will be live with Zach Collins on the call and a pregame show at 5:40 p.m.
