(Denison) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team evened their record at 1-1 with a 39-26 road win over Denison-Schleswig on Tuesday night.
Payton Harter led Atlantic with 19 points, eight coming in the first quarter. Zoey Kirchhoff scored seven, Katrina Williams, 4, Makenna Schroeder and Claire Pellett, three, Maddie Richter, 2, and Lila Wiederstein, 1.
The Trojans held the Monarchs to single digits in each of the four quarters: three points in the first quarter, eight in the second, six in the third, and nine in the fourth. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason says the team did much better on the defensive end.
The Trojans opened the game on a 9-0 run and an 11-3 lead after the first eight minutes of the contest. Harter led the way with eight first-quarter points, most coming from offensive rebounds.
The Monarchs came out in the second quarter outscoring the Trojans 8-2, many of those possessions coming off turnovers. However, Zoey Kirchhoff hit a three, and the Trojans responded with a 7-0 run to end the first half with a 20-11 advantage.
Atlantic began to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring the Monarchs 12-6 and building a 32-17 lead. They extended the lead to 19 points in the second half before the score settled at 39-26.
Mayah Slater led the Monarchs with nine points, Kiana Schulz with 8, Samantha Chandler with 5, Whitlee Auen and Sara Mun each added two points.
Atlantic hosts ACGC on Tuesday. The tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. Denison-Schleswig, (0-1), travel to OABCIG on Tuesday.
