(Des Moines, IA) Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is filing an appeal with the state’s Supreme Court in defense of the Fetal Heartbeat Law. The Iowa Supreme Court will agree to hear the request after a Polk County judge temporarily blocked the law in July.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed the law that summer month, banning abortions after six weeks. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart says most of Iowa does not want that bill passed. Currently, in Iowa, abortion is banned after 20 weeks.
The brief states the Heartbeat law is constitutional, asks the Supreme Court to dismiss Planned Parenthood’s dispute and contends abortion providers cannot sue, given there is no constitutional right to provide abortions.
The Iowa Legislature passed the new law after a lengthy special legislative session despite protestors in attendance late on July 12.
