(Harlan) Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen is looking for people to join the department. Chief Bissen says 26 volunteer firefighters are on the force.
Bissen says business people find it challenging to find employees, and the same goes for volunteers.
Chief Bissen says there are currently 26 firefighters on the staff. The full roster would be 40 firefighters. He says it takes at least 35 members to ensure adequate people will respond to calls 24/7.
It takes 160 hours of training to become Firefighter I certified. Chief Bissen says people joining the Harlan Fire Department now will be issued gear and pager and still go to calls; however, their policy is to keep them out of the “Hot Zone” until they have been thoroughly trained.
People interested in joining the Harlan Fire Department should contact Chief Bissen, call the Fire Station, or visit any department members, and they will lead you in the right direction.
