(Bloomfield) Katelyn Olinger’s two RBI Double lifts Davis County to a 3-2 win over Atlantic in a Class 3A Regional Final Softball game on Tuesday at Bloomfield.
The Mustangs scored three runs on six hits. Madeline Barker picked up the win in the circle. The senior allowed two runs on three hits, six strikeouts, and no walks. Riley Wood took the loss for the Trojans, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, three strikeouts, and one walk.
Barker retired nine straight Trojans batters. Wood was solid in the circle for Atlantic, retiring nine out of eleven to keep the game scoreless through the first three innings.
Ava Rush stopped the streak in the top of the fourth with a single, and Lila Wiederstein blasted a two-run homer to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Rachel McFarland drilled a double and scored on an error to bring her squad within one run after four.
The difference in the game came in the bottom of the sixth. Rachel McFarland reached base on an error, Caden VanLaningham walked, and Katelyn Olinger belted a two-RBI double to lift the home team to a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
Barker Retired the Trojans’ batters to claim the victory and a trip to the State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge.
Olinger led the Mustangs with a double and two RBI; Caden VanLaningham hit two singles, Rachel McFarland laced a double, and Sophia Young hit a single.
Wiederstein led Atlantic with a two-run homer, and Ava Rush and Makenna Schroeder hit singles.
Davis County, the number #4 seed in the state tourney, faces #5 seeded (31-3) Estherville-Lincoln Central in the first round.
Atlantic ends an impressive season with a 23-16 record.
