(Oakland) The AHSTW boys track team will be in the 13-team field at Griswold on Thursday.
Viking coach Jackson Renberg’s group attempts to build off of their 5th place performance on Monday in Woodbine. Luke Sternberg had a big meet with 2nd place finishes in three events. Coach Renberg also says Gavin Newcomb and Nick Denning performed well. “Gavin Newcomb, it was good to see him come back. He’s been resting for a while. We were trying to figure out what was wrong with his quad, so he’s been banged up. He really helped us in the Shuttle Hurdle. Our Shuttle Hurdle got 2nd. Had a little hiccup with a hurdle otherwise we might have been fighting for first. Gavin really helped us out there and he also got 2nd and PR’d in the 110 Highs. That was cool to see. Nick Denning ran a really good 400 for our Sprint Med to finish 2nd. That group was Nick Denning, Seth Pope, David Madill, and Luke Sternberg.”
The distance events also fared well. “Caleb Hatch finally came back from an injury and was able to run one event. He’s probably not in ideal shape right now, but he got 2nd in the 800 without spikes. So he ran really hard. Got close to his PR in the open 800. Collin Harder ran a really good 3200. I was really happy with our 4X800 with Liam Jager, Ty Nelson, Chase Wheatley, and Caden Geraghty. They PR’d with their best time of the year and got 3rd. A lot of positives.”
Coach Renberg adds Jett Peterson got some key points in the throwing events.
Now they turn their attention to Griswold’s meet. “We’ll see if we can finish in the top half, compete for as many points as possible, and do our best.” Renberg says, “We just want to get better every day.”
The schedule is winding down for the Vikings. Next week they have the conference meet on Tuesday and the SW Valley Co-Ed Meet on Thursday. On Thursday, May 11th they’ll go to the 2A State Qualifying Meet at Van Meter.
