(Audubon) A second attempt at a bond referendum not to exceed $2.8 Million will be in front of Audubon voters today for a new fire station.
In January of 2018, the Audubon Fire Department was donated a building and lot by Landus Cooperative. “And then we worked aggressively shortly after that to get it demolished. It was in the latter part of 2019 into 2020 we were able to complete the demolition. Our biggest hill there was asbestos removal. Through our donated funds, we were able to secure the dollar amount that was needed to successfully demo and clear that lot.”
Progress on a new fire station at that location has stalled over the last few years. In November 2021 only 33% of the votes were in favor. 60% is needed to pass. Less than 600 voters turned out. This time around there’s also a vacant city council spot to be voted upon. “We are hoping that will leave a positive impact of voters to get out and be able to vote for both things. Both are very important to our community.” Fire Chief Tyler Thygesen says, “Our building, this really sets forth what we are able to do in the future. We’ve got some big projects being constructed in our community and we need to enhance our facility and our equipment. The current facility just limits our ability to do so”
Thygesen details the plans. “Four bays which will be drive through. Meeting rooms, training rooms, kitchen, office area, and storage for fire and EMS supplies.”
Thygesen adds a 3.75% interest rate has been secured through the USDA.
