(Shenandoah) The Atlantic girl’s basketball team extended their record to 13-4 with a 44-32 win at Shenandoah on Tuesday. The victory tied with the most wins by an Atlantic girl’s basketball team since 2004. The Trojans have four games remaining on the regular season schedule.
“The players set a goal of 14, and we are on pace to do a little better than that,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “We want to keep playing good basketball and improving to give a chance to win every game.”
The first quarter ended at 8-8. The Trojans inched ahead 16-13 at the half.
“The first half consisted of a lot of people picking up rocks off the floor and throwing them at each other,” said Vargason. “Then there was a basketball game going on too. It wasn’t pleasant. The ball wouldn’t go in the hoop for either team. It was one of those nights when you had to learn to win when things were not going well.”
The Fillies took a 30-24 lead in the third quarter, but the Trojans responded with a 14-6 run to secure the victory. On average, the Trojans have allowed opponents a stingy 34 points per game following the holiday break.
“The defense is getting us rolling right now during our shooting slump,” said Vargason.
Three players scored in double-figures for Atlantic. Jada Jensen led the way with 13, Aubrey Guyer, 11, and Paytn Harter scored 10 points. Maddie Huddleson had 6, and Claire Pellett finished the game with 4.
Lynnae Green led Shenandoah with 15-points, Chloe Denton, 12, Kassidy Stephens, 3, and Macey Finlay chipped in two.
Atlantic hosts Saint Albert on Friday night. Shenandoah travels to Denison on Friday night.
