(Avoca) The AHSTW girls basketball team takes an 0-2 record into their game at Riverside on Tuesday. The game will air on 96.5 KSOM with live video HERE
The Lady Vikes suffered losses to Woodbine (65-53) and CAM (58-43) in the first week of the season. Despite the setbacks, coach Jill Vanderhoof saw some encouraging things. “One of the biggest things at the end of the week was when you walked into the locker room you could tell the girls were not happy. They made some mistakes, but the biggest thing we took away as a coaching staff was that last year they might have been okay with the scoring differential that we had, but now they want more. They want to win and they came in the next morning and they were doing everything they can to get back on the winning track.”
Delaney Goshorn is averaging 19 points and 8 rebounds per game. Ellie Peterson, Saydi Paulsen, Rylie Knop, Ella Langer, and Graycen Partlow surround her with some varsity experience. “We have three incoming freshmen and that has just helped them tremendously.” Vanderhoof says, “It’s easier for them to be able to learn from each other.” She says it has created a great atmosphere in practice and is leading to the court.
Last year these two teams played a couple of competitive games. “They do have a lot of veteran athletes back and they have a good background from multiple sports. They are really great athletes. They are quick and scrappy. We need to make sure we are taking care of the ball and try to be the aggressor on defense.”
Pregame coverage hits the air at around 5:45 with the girls game set to tip at 6:00.
