(Oakland) Riverside girls wrestling coach Taylor Frain was impressed with her team’s first outing of the season. The Lady Dawgs competed Monday in a scramble at Nodaway Valley.
Coach Frain says she couldn’t be more proud of the team. “Every single one of those girls went out and put everything they had into their matches. We had three girls go undefeated with Ana Wilson, Carly Henderson, and Jayden Carrigan. They went out and took it to their opponents and went undefeated which was great.”
Even those that didn’t finish with a 3-0 record had some strong performances. “Veronica Schechinger, Danika Feigenbutz, and Paola Gonzalez all went 2-1. They were huge surprises to me with it being their first year wrestling. They executed everything phenomenally.”
Frain adds Macy Woods went 1-2, but showed a lot of fight. “Went up against two girls who were phenomenal wrestlers. Macy, being the less experienced wrestler, held her own.” Frain says, “Overall I love how each and every one of our girls competed. They went out and put everything they had. I could not be more proud of those girls.”
The first competition allowed them to identify some things they still need to work on. “We need to keep hitting the basics and getting better with those. A lot of our losses happened because we got caught in a bad position or our opponent did a move that we haven’t gone over yet.”
Next up is a tournament at Ridge View on Saturday.
