(Area) The COVID-19 pandemic is moving to a new phase with reported cases declining following the omicron surge.
Rural communities have been hit hard by COVID-19. Many rural counties have experienced higher rates of COVID-19 than their urban counterparts. For example, as of March 2022, about 15 percent of COVID-19 cases and about 18 percent of deaths came from non-metropolitan areas.
Dr. Neil Ku, hospital epidemiologist and medical director of infection control and antimicrobial stewardship at Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana, says that while cases are declining in urban and rural areas, COVID-19 is not going away any time soon.
With the ongoing decline in the number of cases, Dr. Ku says now is a good time to take preventative steps to protect yourself from getting COVID-19 in the future.
He says getting a COVID-19 vaccine, or up-to-date booster, is the most effective option.
Dr. Ku says there are a couple of ways to find more information about COVID-19 vaccines, it’s side effects and benefits.
