(Council Bluffs) Big Lake in Council Bluffs recently received an influx of trout.
The DNR’s stocking effort released between 1,000 and 2,000 trout into the lake. “This is one of our urban trout fisheries. We stock it twice a year with trout to just boost the fishing. At Big Lake that does it. The number of fish we stock per acre is high and that improves catch rates for sure.” DNR Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes says the trout come from the Big Springs Hatchery in northeast Iowa. “They are trucked down here and a whole is cut in the ice with a chain saw. That happened two weeks ago. People have been fishing them since, but I thought I’d bring it up and remind people if they are looking for something to do and something different then trout fishing could be on the agenda for the weekend.”
Anglers must have a trout stamp in addition to a regular fishing license. Children age 15 and younger can fish with a properly licensed adult.
