(Villisca) The Villisca Fire Department responded to a house fire at 407 E. 6th Street early this morning on a report of flames coming from the home’s basement.
Villisca Fire Chief John Bruce says the call went out at 12:10 a.m.; firefighters arrived at 12:15 a.m. reporting the occupants evacuated the residence and moderate smoke from the front door.
Firefighters located the fire in the basement and began defensive suppression operations to knock it down. The fire originated from the cellar burned inside the interior kitchen and living room wall on the first floor. Utilizing thermal cameras, firefighters located the fire within the walls.
Chief Bruce says the fire damage was contained to the basement and the interior of the kitchen and living room wall. Firefighters wrapped up the operation at around 2:00 a.m. There were no injuries.
The fire started from a space heater near a bed in the basement.
Authorities contacted the Red Cross to assist with four adults and one child.
The estimated damage is undetermined at this release, and the house could remain liveable with the necessary repairs.
Villisca Public Works, Villisca Power, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Villisca Ambulance, Red Oak Rescue, Alliant Energy, and the American Red Cross assisted the Villisca Fire Department at the scene.
