(Audubon) The Audubon Rec Center is adding on.
Jason Hocker is on the subcommittee and says they started in the spring. “We are making really great progress. The plan is to add a gymnasium to the east of the existing facility. This was in the original design, but got put on hold for cost reasons. Now that the rec center is up and running and has been successful we feel it’s a great time to add that extra amenity on there and enhance what we have.”
Nearly $2 Million is the fundraising goal. “Our bids came in at $1.97 Million and some change. We got the word out there early and have gotten some pledges and donations. So far since March we’ve been able to raise a little over $525,000 which is a great start on that project.”
Hocker says private donations and a grain challenge have been utilized thus far and now they’ll begin the grant process. He outlines the plans of the expansion. “There will be a full court basketball complex. We’ll have one full court running north and south and there can be two courts going east and west. We’ll have a two lane walking track around that. In addition to basketball we’ll have the ability for either one volleyball court our two. We are hoping to be able to host regional tournaments here in either basketball or volleyball.”
The facility just celebrated its third anniversary. “Fortunately the community has been extremely supportive and overall the project has been really successful.”
They are hoping to order a building package by the end of the year. An open house will be held November 29th to show the plans.
