(Anita) CAM’s Lane Spieker got his senior season off to a great start and his team began the year on a high note by beating Fremont-Mills 48-6.
The Cougars scored twice in their first four plays from scrimmage and never trailed. In doing so, they beat the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in the quarterfinal round last year. Spieker’s final tallies included 26 rushing attempts for 239 yards and five touchdowns. He completed 4/5 passes for 50 yards. On CAM’s first drive he carried the ball all three times for gains of 6, 30, and a 12 yard score. On the second possession he went 70 yards to the house on the first play.
A Jake Malcom 36 yard scoring run accounted for the only Fremont-Mills points of the night. The senior QB fooled the defense on a fake to the running back and sprinted up the left sideline to tie the game at 6-6 with 5:59 left in the 1st. CAM’s defense was locked in from that point on. Joe Kauffman posted nine tackles while Colby Rich had a fumble recovery, blocked punt, and two interceptions. Jack Follmann record six stops. Fremont-Mills posted 122 yards on the ground and 28 through the air. CAM had 464 yards of offense with 414 on the ground.
Joe Kauffman’s one yard TD run extended CAM’s lead to 20-6 midway through the 2nd quarter. Spieker scored on runs of 11 and 35 yards to make it a 40-6 halftime score. Neither team scored in a penalty filled third quarter. Kauffman had another one yard plunge with 8:14 remaining to put the running clock rule into effect and bring the second teamers into the contest. The game ended on a down note as reserve running back Chase Spieker suffered a serious leg injury and the final four plus minutes were wound off the clock.
