(Fort Dodge) Williamsburg defeated Atlantic 3-0 in the Class 3A third-place consolation game at Fort Dodge on Friday afternoon.
The Trojans end the year with a record-setting season. The Trojans set a record for most wins in a season with 34 and earned back-to-back Hawkeye Ten Conference Championships.
“This one stings much like the loss to Davenport, Assumption, but a week from now, one month from now, and at their ten-year class reunion, they will remember the 11 inning win over Anamosa in the quarterfinals,” said Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann. “They’ll talk about winning the conference two straight years, going through COVID and those types of things.”
Jayden Kennebeck picked up the win for Williamsburg, allowing no runs on three hits, struck out one, and didn’t walk a batter. Peyton Driscoll closed out the game in the seventh. Olivia Engler took the loss allowing three runs on nine hits, struck out four and three walks.
Williamsburg got the ball rolling offensively in the bottom of the third inning. Olivia Stratton drew a walk, Makenna Hughes hit a single, and Carly Campbell drilled a base hit and drove them home for a 2-0 lead. Charlotte Wetjen drove home the third run in the fifth inning to give the Raiders a three-run cushion.
The Trojans made a run for it in the top of the seventh inning. Engler and Kennedy Goergen belted back-to-back singles, and Lauren Nicholas, hit by a pitch, loaded the bases with one out. However, Peyton Driscoll fired a strikeout and forced a ground out to end the game.
Engler hit two singles, and Goergen, Ava Rush, and Caroline Pellett accounted for the other three Trojan hits.
Charlotte Wetjen drilled a double and an RBI single, Makenna Hughes belted a double, and a single, and Carly Campbell stroked an RBI single to lead Williamsburg.
The Raiders end the season with a record of 33-11. Atlantic finished fourth in the 3A field and 34-7 overall.
