(Denison) The Iowa State Patrol and local law enforcement will be heavily patrolling Highway 59 in southwest Iowa today, particularly Highway 59 from Interstate 80 to Highway 37.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and Public Information Office Shelby McCreedy said statewide initiatives are taking place this weekend in cooperation with the nationwide initiatives. “Part of this is identifying problematic roadways or roadways that have been historically high for serious injury or fatal crashes,” said McCreedy. “Highway 59 is one of those roadways that rises to the top in western Iowa.
Trooper McCreedy says the State Patrol identified Highway 59 and some areas recording high numbers of fatal crashes. “The area that stood out was the corridor from Interstate 80 to Highway 37, although the entire Highway 59 corridor is included in the project.”
McCreedy says law enforcement will look for speeding, seatbelt usage, violation of the move over law, and other behaviors dangerous to other motorists.
This joint project involves the Iowa State Patrol, Harlan Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
