(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ soccer team is on a roll. The Trojans notched their sixth consecutive win, with a 7-0 victory over Riverside on Monday.
“The first half was one of our worst of the season,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “We didn’t score until the 10-minute mark to play in the first half. We struggled to find any rhythm, and we got outhustled a little bit.
“We made some adjustments, started to figure things out and moved the ball, and scored two goals in the final two minutes of the first half,” said Vargason. “We came out in the second half and took control of the game.”
The Trojans didn’t allow a shot on goal throughout the entire contest.
“Defensively we were never really threatened,” said Coach Vargason. “Quinn Grubbs, Hannah Carlson, Maycie Waters, and Grace Barkley did a great job in the back. And our goalie, Edria Brummer, touched the ball twice, and it wasn’t on saves. The defense did a tremendous job like they’ve done all season. Offensively it took us a little bit of time to get going and find some rhythm in the game.”
Jada Jensen scored six goals, broke the single-season scoring record with 24-goals, and broke her own single-game scoring record. Jensen now has 24-goals this season which breaks the old record of 23, set by Tatum Grubbs, sidelined with an injury this season.
“It’s really cool that Tatum continues to be a part of this team,” said Vargason. “It’s unfortunate she had that ACL injury because she would have been electric for this year as well. She’s been a great teammate and handled this with class. She’s there supporting her teammates, and we’re heartbroken that she is not able to play. Tatum shows great character and cares a lot about this program.”
Aubrey Guyer scored the other goal and contributed one assist. Lindley Eblen and Jensen each dealt one assist for Atlantic.
The team is also setting records. The Trojans are now 9-5 on the season. The nine wins are the highest single-season total in the history of the program.
Atlantic plays Carroll on Thursday, pending the availability of game Officials. The game could be moved up to Wednesday. One more victory would secure a winning season for the first time in program history.
“We haven’t thought too much about records,” said Vargason. “We just want to keep winning and win at the right time.”
