(Oakland) Despite being in his first year of high school track, Riverside senior Brogan Allensworth is a Drake Relays qualifier.
Allensworth, a dual-sport participant with soccer, will compete Thursday in the High Jump. Bulldog head coach Alex Oliver has been impressed with Allensworth’s work ethic. “When I first started coaching Brogan I thought he was just an athlete, but I’ve been really impressed with his work ethic. He gets here right away and he’s not super in love with running, but he does it and works hard and pushes other kids along the way.”
Allensworth is a starter on Riverside’s 3-0 boys soccer team, but has doubled up with track this spring as well. “He did some relays and high jump in junior high. He told me as a sophomore he thought he could jump 6’1″ so I said anytime he wanted he could show up and jump. He told me he’d do it next year. So as a junior he came and worked out and had some practices. He jumped 6’2″ or 6’3″ in sweatpants and the wind and the cold.”
He’s cleared 6’3” so far this year which is tied for 21st among all classes. One of his main goals for the season is to earn a medal at state. He has the 2nd best jump in Class 1A so far this year.
