(Council Bluffs) Three golfers finished in the top five to lead Atlantic to the team title at the Lewis Central Golf Tournament at Fox Run on Thursday.
Drey Newell carded an 80 and placed third overall to lead the Trojans. Lane Nelson finished fourth with an 80, Braden Smith, fifth, 82, and Garrett McLaren came in eighth with an 87. Atlantic topped the eight-team field with a 329.
“We weren’t pleased with our 341 scores at the Shenandoah Tournament on Tuesday,” said Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste “I thought we could’ve shot better so I challenged the guys and they came through today with a 329.
“Drey Newell and Lane Nelson had very good rounds both shooting 80’s, which is excellent,” said Den Beste. “Braden Smith followed that with an 82. He was seven over par on the front nine but played well on the back nine to card an 82. Garrett McLaren had some struggles but kept it together to finish with an 87. All four of them placed and we got the win.”
Brett Klusmann of St. Albert earned medalist honors in the tournament with a 38-39, 77. Colby Burg, of Creston, finished runner-up medalist with a 79.
