(Harlan) Heath Stein has been hired to lead the Harlan baseball program.
Coach Stein is a Harlan alum and has been on staff with the Cyclones. “I’m very excited to get rolling. I played for five years, came back and coached when I was out of high school for three years, spent some time elsewhere, and have been back for six years.”
He takes over for the recently retired Steve Daeges who won over 700 games in his career. Stein wants to keep the tradition alive. “The goal is always to get to Des Moines and see what happens when you get there.”
Stein embraced the opportunity to coach under Daeges and alongside two veteran assistants in Mark Vande Berg and Joe Heese. “I’ve just tried to be a sponge. It was always in my plans to try and come back here and take this over.”
Stein has also coached at Carlisle, SE Polk, ADM, and was a grad assistant at Northwest Missouri State. He says throwing strikes, playing strong defense, and running the bases well will be priorities as he takes the top spot in the Harlan dugout.
